Firstly, thanks to everyone on the Tri-ang Railways world Facebook group that helped me research this piece.
Here we have the first metal wheeled version of the iconic Princess Elizabeth loco that has been dated to about 1954.
It is a good runner that we have serviced and is in lovely condition for a 70 year plus engine with no broken bits. Note this will not run on modern track. Super 4 track or earlier required
It currently has a zero 1 chip fitted which would be easily removed. A previous owner many moons ago come up with an ingenious way to convert it. I would imagine it has to be one of the oldest conversions out there!
A little history :
The reason we can be so precise is that it has a version of the X03 motor that was only manufactured for a short period. It is an early version that has a number of features that identify it: the H shaped brass bracket next to the magnet, and the short lived choke (black thing on the left of the motor ) aswell as the usual TV suppressor. Also if you look carefully you can see the oil pad by the worm is mounted with the pad accessible from the side. I’ve struggled to even find another picture of this version! This was soon changed to the version of the X03 we are more familiar with on its journey to becoming the XO4
