Extremely well made clockwork toy. The sparks are produced by hitting roughened steel against ferrocerium. Ferrocerium (aka ferro rod or flint) is a man-made metallic material with pyrophoric (fire-bearing) qualities. The same material is used in cigarette lighters, as well as strikers used for gas welding and cutting torches.
